HAC Announces Temporary Closure of 50-Meter Competitive Pool

Holland Aquatic Center announces the temporary closure of its 50-meter pool beginning Monday, March 28. The competitive pool will close for an estimated four weeks while its construction upgrades begin. As long as construction milestones continue to be reached, HAC plans on reopening its largest pool the week of April 25th.

Athletes and guests will have access to other pools for lap swim during the closure.

The remodeled competitive area will feature increased natural lighting, upgraded chemical management and mechanical systems and additional spectator seating. The expanded spectator area can accommodate over 800 spectators.

HAC scheduled renovation of the competitive pool around their school partners’ swim seasons. Construction in this area will add a new five-lane, 25-yard pool and diving well. Scheduled to be complete by August 2022, the new pool will allow athletes more room to warm up and cool-down during events. It will also provide extra lanes for members and guests to lap swim.

“Our 50-meter pool draws in competitors from all over the country. We want to make sure we can comfortably accommodate all of the spectators coming to cheer on their athletes,” said Executive Director Jack Huisingh. “With the increase in natural lighting, additional seating and upgraded chemical management and mechanical systems, Holland Aquatic Center will be one of the best competition pools in the state.”

The 50-meter pool renovation is part of the last phase of HAC’s $26 million expansion and renovation project which began Spring 2020 and is taxpayer-supported. Several areas opened to the public in early February such as an expanded fitness area, warm-water zone and Splash Zone.

The new second-floor fitness area features a wellness room, a variety of exercise equipment and an indoor track measuring one-tenth of a mile and overlooking the surrounding community and pools below. The warm-water zone includes a warm-water lap pool, sauna, steam room and large, quadrantal hot tub. The family-friendly Splash Zone consists of a three-story indoor slide, a lazy river area, zero-entry wading pool and another large pool area for aquatic play.

Also completed in February were Holland Aquatic Center’s expanded lobby and universal change area.

The full renovation and expansion project is scheduled for completion of Fall, 2022.
