For our newest Community Impact Story, we turned our focus to Debra Austhof: a Zeeland resident, Holland Aquatic Center member, and dedicated Rock Steady Boxing participant. Debra has been taking Rock Steady Boxing for eight years and continues to show up with consistency and a positive attitude.
Rock Steady Boxing is a scientifically-based exercise program centered around no-contact boxing that is specifically designed to address symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Classes involve a variety of exercises adapted from boxing drills, including footwork, coordination, strength training, and balance exercises. Besides the proven physical benefits, participants will find camaraderie, support, and encouragement when they make Rock Steady Boxing a regular part of their routine.
Over the years, Debra has noticed how important staying active has been for her overall wellbeing. Regular movement has helped her feel less pain and maintain higher energy levels. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 13 years ago, she also appreciates how consistency in activity has helped maintain her abilities, which has been especially meaningful to her. A small win she’s noticed since joining Rock Steady Boxing is an improved range of motion in her right shoulder, which was her presenting symptom. Seeing that progress has been motivating and rewarding for her.
One of the things Debra enjoys most about coming to class is the camaraderie. She loves working with the focus mitts and especially enjoys boxing, which is the movement that makes her feel the most confident and strong. Even though she hadn’t tried boxing before this class, it has become a powerful and empowering part of her routine. She also mentioned how qualified Amy [Smith, RSB coach] is and how great the volunteers are.
When asked what she would tell someone thinking about joining the class, Debra said, “[It’s] really fun, really good, and if you don’t laugh, that’s your problem.”
Outside of class, Debra stays active every day. She enjoys Pilates, indoor walking, reading and listening to books, doing puzzles, and spending time with her grandchildren. Before retiring, she worked as a registered nurse (which she loved) before moving into case management.
We’re grateful for Debra’s dedication, positivity, and the energy she brings to Rock Steady Boxing and Holland Aquatic Center. Be sure to say hello the next time you see her!
