Lifeguard Certifications

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
HAC offers American Red Cross lifeguard training and certification, required for all official Red Cross lifeguards. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding (including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, valid for two years. Please be aware that the skill practice sessions in this course involve strenuous physical activity.
Prerequisites
- Must be at least 15 years old before the last scheduled class session.
- Ability to pass prerequisite skills evaluation, which includes two parts and takes place during the first in-person session:
- Jump in, submerge, resurface and swim 150 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes (legs only), and then swim 50 more yards. While swimming, you must keep your face in the water and demonstrate good breath control. You may swim using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both (back or side not permitted). Swim goggles are allowed.
- Complete the following within 1 minute, 40 seconds without swim goggles: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards with face in or out of the water. Surface dive (head or feet first) to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Waterpark Lifeguarding
The purpose of the Waterpark Skills module is to teach lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in aquatic facilities with waterpark features.
This certification is valid for two years.
Bloodborne Pathogens
The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens Training course is to teach participants how to protect themselves and others from exposure to bloodborne pathogens on the job, and what to do if an exposure occurs. The course content and activities will prepare participants to make appropriate decisions about preventing bloodborne pathogen disease transmission.
This certification is valid for one year.

Administering Emergency Oxygen
Purpose is to give participants the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to a victim of a breathing emergency using breathing devices, including resuscitation masks, bag-valve-mask resuscitators (BVMs) and emergency oxygen.
This certification is valid for two years.

CPR/AED for professional rescuers
The purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers course is to teach professional rescuers the skills needed to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive an American Red Cross certificate for CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, valid for two years. Please be aware that some skill practices involve strenuous physical activity and you will be doing skills on the floor.
This training meets OSHA requirements and is valid for two years.
